Did you make ‘new year’ resolutions?

If yes, how far gone are you on your list?

I am not sure why, but New year resolutions come to mind whenever I think about goals.

This is not because it is wrong to make a list of goals in the new year, but because a lot of us join the bandwagon, draw up goals and fail to see it through.

I have seen people enthusiastically set goals in the new year and fall back on them before the first quarter is over. I listed a number of reasons why our goals become mere words in Another Resolution Story. It also includes helpful tips on how to set goals.

One of the most important factor of living a purpose filled life is knowing why you should make goals and being able to see them through from start to finish.

Goal setting is basically being able to decide what you want to achieve and devising a plan to achieve the desired result.

So you set goals because you have a genuine reason, you are propelled to do better and not because someone else is doing it.

Goal setting

In Exceeding Limits, it was mentioned that diving into a project is not the right way to go. We need to set goals because it gives us a clear direction and we can be in control of our time and resources.

Living a meaningful life will sometimes mean we cannot do things haphazardly. We need to have realistic goals because it helps us stay organised, we can measure our progress and be accountable for our decisions.

To make the most of our time, it is usually better to have a blueprint that gives us a general idea of what needs to be done, why it should be done, when it needs to be done, how it can be done and the likely outcome of what is to be done. Write them on paper if you have to.

If you have a blueprint, then congratulations you have successfully taken the first step in achieveing your goals.

The only problem is, you will need a little work to ensure you do not to stop halfway into a specific goal.

Have it in mind that you should not jumble all goals together. You should have specific goals for your career, family, finance, children, body, relationship, yourself and your behaviour.

To guard your goals in simple steps, remember to:

  • Break your goals into small similar unit.
  • Focus
  • Be decisive
  • Monitor your progress
  • Celebrate each milestone. (Daily, weekly, monthly).
  • Get involved in leisure activities that align with your goal.
  • Avoid Procrastination
  • No one has a method that works for everyone so be open to taking correction and making adjustments.

Happy Goal Setting!!!

  1. I’ve learned to set smaller goals – otherwise I set myself up for disappointment. I like to see myself achieve something and to have small successes rather than dismal failures, but without goals of some sort we do tend to stagnate.

  2. Thank you for some fresh ideas on the topic of setting goals. If I achieved all my goals I would be the most amazing person. No concerns there. I’m good at making them. Not so good at keeping them!

    1. Awww…it’s that way for most of us…I’m sure the goals that are of utmost importance gets done and on time too…you’ll get around the others one after the other. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Shirley☺☺

  3. I usually set a big goal and then sub goals which are bite sized to help me achieve the main one. We can’t really achieve anything without a goal and a plan to work towards. Have a great week!
